Marsden Jazz Festival

Held each October across the Pennine village of Marsden, this is jazz spread through the fabric of a place rather than penned into a single field. Performances happen in the nineteenth-century Mechanics Hall, in working men's clubs and pubs, in the parish church, at the park bandstand and out on Peel Street, which is closed to traffic so the crowd can gather around free open-air sets. The programming is deliberately broad, running from traditional and big band through to modern, experimental and world-influenced playing, with international names, touring bands, local school ensembles and open mics all given room. A Saturday parade winds through the centre, and much of the weekend costs nothing to attend. It tends to suit those who enjoy moving between small venues and want a festival woven into everyday village life rather than staged apart from it.
